Tim’s Pi-500 is going deep makeover for that extra edge to make a solid run for the middle of the pack in 2013. Engine parts, ignition, brakes, tires, extra slippery paint…the list is endless.
The bike as you’ve know it, is no longer…new colour scheme is in design phase.
TAKING DESIGN AND MECHANICAL SUGGESTIONS NOW!!
Honda Red is the likely base colour. Silver frame. Looking for that 70’s feel.
What are you planning to put into the motor?
I’m upgrading my CB450 to 5 speed transmission (from a 500T) but may go farther into the motor as well.

Hi Dan:
I’m getting some new pistons put in, and that will mean a refresh on rings and seeing if everything else in the motor is good. I have Mikuni carbs on now - that will stay the same.
I’m also putting the ignition off the crank instead of the electronic ignition I now have on the cam. Al Lyloff is going to do that for me. It also takes the big/heavy charging rotor off the crank, so there’s less dead weight when revving.
Hi Dan: and I forgot about the transmission. No changes there except maybe some new clutch plates. May have been my imagination, but I think I felt some slippage when conditions were right in certain corners this summer. Have never touched them before, so it might be time.
Tim
I installed a Boyer with their new micro coils before the season (of the cranc) and it worked very well, only uses 1A/h so can run all weekend on a 4Amp battery without a charging system. also the bike is very easy to start.
Bought it from Mike Woldrige who is distributer for Boyer in ON. Didn’t cost much and received it in under 2 weeks.
I still have the old system on the shelf A Boyer MK3 with 2 Andrews coils, this used to empty the battery really quick at 6A/h

Sounds like my problems through the last 3 years. I’m looking forward to getting that done, and not having a big battery aboard.
For 2 seasons I wasn’t finishing races because of ignition problems, once Voltage dropped under 11.5V one of the cylinders was cutting.
This season I finished almost every race and never had ignition issues again. Send Mike an e-mail (sales@walridge.com), you wii have it for around $220 (you only need a single double coil).

Like I said, I’m making a serious run for the middle of the pack…and I want to finish races too.

Hey Tim, just from that picture I’d suggest hooking the fuel lines from the petcock up to the carbs, should help move you through the pack better!

Hi Graham: Good catch. Reminds me of the time I couldn’t get the bike started. I didn’t put the needles back in the carbs…
I think we’ve all had our moments. One of my early races involved a great start, for about half a lap and then it barely ran at all. Finally pulled off and found that I had left the choke on, on one of the carbs.
Ride and learn, eh!
Can’t wait to see the “New and Improved” version, but don’t forget the fuel lines!

Do you plan on running a full fairing Tim? I always liked how it looked as is(color scheme), but maybe if the frame was a different color than the rest of the bike, it may “pop” a little more.
Having a reliable race bike(re: updated ignition) takes a lot of pressure off during a race weekend.
Good luck!

Hi Tim: No fairing for me. I was thinking about a sleeker tank though, but haven’t started any shopping/research to see if anything would fit on my stock frame.
I’ve seen some of the 70’s Honda racers and they all have silver frames and the Honda Red with white panels on the tank. That was my first goal years ago, but my brother couldn’t find the right paint. It turned out orange.
Will also look for a rear racing rim (stock on now) and re-spoke it to my hub to complete the image.
Middle of the Pack-man!! See you at the AGM?
I liked the orange, always thought it was by purpose.
Hmmm…can’t say I’ve seen many with a silver frame, but imagine it would look good. Most I’ve seen are black or red…

I think the silver frame kinda gets lost unless you paint the engine, but that’s just me…
I’ll see you in Trenton,
Tim
Hi Tim: I’m having second thoughts too. The motor doesn’t stand out in a silver frame. And Ashton Bond chimed in too saying he liked the orange. It won’t be orange again, but I’m still working on the colours. I looked at the silver frame because there was a racer this year, really fast, Honda 4 cylinder, blue tank and silver frame, well prepared bike. He did a great job on it.
And then there’s Scott Martin’s bikes. Black frames and Honda red. That’s a possibility.
The paint has to look fast - that’s what most important…
…racing stripes are known to add 5 mph to the top end.

That’s Brent Waller’s P2 MWP race bike. A great example to follow! Here’s a rare photo of it at rest…any other time, it’s just a bluuurrr… ![]()
