p.s. We’re hosting an old AHRMA pal, Garry Bird, and I might be able to trick him in to joining me Sat and/or Sun afternoons.
We have to do something about pit in/pit out. The pit-out guys sit in the shade with the breeze, whiile the pit-in guys sit in the blazing sun with no breeze at all. There must be a way of shifting the duties around, because frankly, I’m not going to spend another three days at pit-in.
Hi Larry,
You are speaking exclusively about Shannonville. We do have the same pop-up canopy for pit in as we do pit out. I certainly hope you know that I am always looking for ways to improve the volunteer experience, so if you have any additional suggestions on how we can improve pit in at Shannonville I am all ears, but we unfortunately can’t control the weather, or where/which direction the wind blows.
Lyssa
Yes, just Shannonville of course. But rotating people from pit in to pit out for even a half day at a time would make things more bearable. The canopy helps a bit, of course, but by afternoon the sun’s far enough around that most of the shade is on the other side of the fence. I did both positions last year and worked mostly pit out, and believe me, it’s a LOT more comfortable what with sitting in the shade, plus there’s always a bit of a breeze under the grandstand just because of the difference in air temp between shade and sun. Things get pretty brutal at pit in during the afternoon when it’s sunny.
Good weekend, though; as usual you did a great job of stirring up the help!
I appreciate that feedback Larry. A few solutions are already coming to mind - swapping between teams Is definitely one, but perhaps even moving the location of pit in. Maybe seeing if we can get power from the washroom building extended over and bringing out a giant fan. I will definitely look into it and see what we can do to make this better going forward. Thank you!
Just shifting the pit in post to the other side, near the grandstand, would probably take care of the sun problem in the afternoon. There might be a slight issue with late-comers for the next race entering from the right side instead of the left if we moved pit in to the grandstand side, but I don’t think that’s an insurmountable issue. Pretty easy to do, anyway.
